2008 Ford Falcon, 2007 Subaru Forester amongst safest used cars on the road

Australians looking to purchase a safe used car would be wise to choose vehicles such as the 2008 Ford Falcon FG or the 2007 Subaru Forester, according to the latest Used Car Safety Ratings Guide (USCR) which was released today (August 8).

The UCSR is now in its 20th year and is an annual collaboration by industry experts such as VicRoads, the Transport Accident Commission, the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria and the Monash University Accident Research Centre.

"The road toll could be as low as 200 a year if everyone chose to drive a safer vehicle. Today we are showing Victorians how a simple decision to drive the safest car in its class can literally save lives," said minister for roads Terry Mulder in a statement.

"The Guide identifies a number of "safe picks" to help motorists easily identify what features they should be looking for when purchasing a car. These are on display today along with a number of other vehicles to show just what a big difference they can make."

The report will be of particular interest to fleet managers as well as it may provide some indication as to which vehicles will remain in a good safe condition for a long period of time.

Furthermore it could offer some information on which brands and models will require less fleet maintenance in the future.

Mr Mulder went on to highlight a number of vehicles which were considered less safe by the UCSR, such as the 2004 Daewoo Tacuma and the 1999 Nissan Pulsar, which both received one star ratings.
