How to avoid and manage 'road rage'

All drivers at some point have been left frustrated and angry from a bout of poor driving. Whether you were at fault or not, your next actions could have major ramifications for the safety of yourself and other drivers.

In recent years, there have been countless incidents of road rage - particularly overseas - that have had dire consequences. It is therefore important that fleet drivers know how to avoid road rage and, if you experience it, how to manage it.

Be in the right frame of mind

Fleet managers should be wary of having drivers out during peak traffic. With the enviable back log of traffic and minor accidents, pressure can rise and drivers can soon be seeing red.

It is also important not to drive when in an emotional state. If your focus is not fully on the road, the mind can wander and create deadly situations.

Avoid conflict 

Drivers should avoid over-reacting to situations whether at fault or not. Everyone on the road makes mistakes and by essentially ramming the point home that a mistake was made can make the whole situation worse.

Some drivers can react poorly to criticism and are looking for conflict. When this occurs it is best to stay calm and not make eye contact. Don't respond to headlight flashing or horn honking as this will further enrage the driver.

In the situation deteriorates and your safety is put at risk, then you are urged to drive to a public place or call the police.

If it was your fault, then a simple raised hand and an apologetic face can diffuse the situation. It is not worth comforting a driver as the risk is too big.
