Queensland diesel prices on the rise, RACQ statistics reveal

The price of diesel in Queensland has risen by nearly 20 cents per litre over the last two years, according to new statistics released by the RACQ on January 8.

Sunshine state motorists looking to fill up their diesel engines last month were required to pay more than 15 per cent extra than they would have in December 2010, a fact which RACQ executive manager of public policy Michael Roth attributes to high prices set not only by overseas exporters, but by local fuel companies as well.

"While unleaded petrol is refined locally, much of our diesel is imported from Asia where demand has remained high and kept the prices up," said Mr Roth.

"However, refiners, wholesalers and retailers have been steadily plumping up the total diesel margins over the past two years, pocketing some healthy profits by charging motorists more."

Mr Roth noted that while the strong performance of the Australian dollar has helped prevent the cost of diesel from rising even further, increasing demand from Asian economies would likely keep prices high in 2013.

He recommended that Queensland motorists looking to reduce their fuel bills regularly check the RACQ website in order to find out which areas of the state are offering the lowest prices.
