The safest utility vehicles for your fleet

Utility vehicles have a certain place in the hearts of Australians. The flexibility, reliability and ruggedness of the design makes a ute ideal for many industries. One thing that can be added to that list - especially if the right utility vehicle is chosen - is safety.

Smaller and more economical than many small trucks, and with a larger capacity than a standard car, the ute fits the bill for many fleet managers.

Fleet safety is essential for many companies in order to protect their employee assets, as well as their physical ones. Knowing that a driver will receive a high level of protection if he or she is involved in an accident will surely be a weight off the mind of a fleet manager.

So what are some of the safest utility vehicles on the Australian market? With the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) releasing its latest crash test report, now could be a good time to discuss.

Isuzu D-Max

The latest utility vehicles to achieve ANCAP's coveted 5 Star safety rating, the Isuzu D-Max 4x4 Crew Cab models (from November 2013 onwards) and 4x2 High-Ride Crew Cab variants (from November 2014) received some of the highest possible safety scores.

A number of standard extras ensured the D-Max models achieved an overall rating of 33.58 out of 37.

Antilock brakes (ABS), electronic brake distribution (EBD), dual frontal, side-chest and side-head airbags, electronic stability control (ESC) and advanced seat belt reminders in the front two seats were praised by ANCAP for offering drivers a great deal of safety for no extra purchasing cost.

Other high scoring utes include the Ford Ranger (2014 onwards) with a rating of 35.72 out of 37. The Mazda BT-50 (2011 onwards) also rated highly for all models including side airbags, with the same 35.72 score.

A utility vehicle is able to provide high levels of protection to fleet services, meaning a business that favours using them should not be put off by safety concerns - as long as they choose the correct models.
