Will Australia experience a white out?

An American company has revealed that white has eclipsed silver in the popularity stakes, with more white coloured cars supplied than any other colour.

PPG industries, a leading global supplier of car paint, announced white has taken the lead with a 3 per cent increase in sales of white cars up from the previous year worldwide.

A similar percentage change is evident in the Asia Pacific Region, with white cars up 3 per cent now making up 26 per cent of all cars sold.

This might be something to consider if you are an Australian fleet manager as you may want to choose a car colour that stands out from the crowd to emphasise your brand.

The next most popular car colour is silver, which is down by 3 per cent in the region, now sitting at 20 per cent of the market. Black followed with an 18 per cent market share.

PPG spokesperson, Jane Harrington said white has dominated the market due to the number of varieties available in the market.

"Car manufacturers are seeking ways to create variations of white, silver, black and gray that are specific to their brands and that complement different vehicle types. Distinct effects such as micas, glass flakes, fine bright aluminum and hue-shifting pigments help them achieve this," she said.

Colour choices for vehicles are influenced by fashion, RMIT School of Architecture and Design Associate Professor Karen Webster told the Sydney Morning Herald.

Car manufacturers are already choosing colours for the 2016 and 2017 models, and PPG has introduced a range of five colour palettes for the season, which is something to bear in mind alongside issues of fuel consumption when looking at future models.

The Hi-Breed range features natural colours, while autumnal colours are a highlight in the mosaic range. There are a range of desert colours in New Spirit, and opulent colours in the Magnifigance range, which was named after a combination of the words magnificent and elegance. The fifth range, theorem, is a minimal palette with shades of brown, red and rich blue.
